Following Up with FollowUp.cc: A Case Study

FollowUp.cc contacted Demo Duck to help refresh and improve their existing video.  The goal was to explain how their product worked so new customers would know exactly what to do when they got started.  FollowUp.cc also wanted to showcase just how easy the product is to use, introduce the features, and encourage people to give it a try.

Before we dive into the results, let’s learn a bit about FollowUp.cc and compare the original video with the new one that we produced.

What does FollowUp.cc do?

FollowUp.cc allows you to set email reminders quickly and from any device.

For example, if you BCC a message to [email protected], you’ll get a reminder in 2 weeks.  If you CC it, everyone on the thread will get the reminder.  Pretty simple, right?

The Videos

The original video was a straightforward screencast produced in-house.  No bells and whistles, just a simple product walk-through.

When we created the new video, we started from scratch but covered the same main points as the first while adding some extra polish.

So what’s the difference?

There were just three main changes:

  1. We edited the content down to take less than half the time to present (from 2:09 to 0:56)
  2. We included a professional voiceover
  3. We topped it off with zooms and simple animations to keep the viewer’s eye exactly where we wanted it

You might be surprised to discover how much benefit you can get from a little polish and a succinct message.  So let’s take a look at the results.

The Results

FollowUp.cc used two metrics when comparing the videos – signups and video play rate.

FollowUp.cc saw an impressive 22% increase in signups in just one month after the new video was posted.  After just 2 months, the new video surpassed the original demo’s total number of plays…even though the original had been live for 3 years.

While a drastic increase in views is great, and an uptick in signups is better, here’s the real kicker – FollowUp.cc also saw a 40% increase in revenue the month after those increased signups. People weren’t just watching the video and forgetting about it, they were signing up for trials, feeling comfortable with the tool, and paying to keep using something they loved.

Suzanne Cohen from FollowUp.cc put it this way, “We are focused on customer success and we think that video plays a key role in ensuring customers understand the basics from the very beginning.”

It’s a win for everybody. People get introduced to a great email management and reminder tool, FollowUp.cc gets more paying customers, and we get to know that the work we’re doing is providing a measurable and positive return on investment.

Summary

So when you’re planning your next video remember:

  • Keep it short and sweet
  • Script the narration and use a professional voice talent
  • Use visuals and motion to guide the viewer, not distract
